This infamous unit was formed originally as Wilddiebkommando Oranienburgon June 15th, 1940. It soon became known as the SS-SonderbataillonDirlewanger. By September, 1943, the unit was a regiment in size. Afterfalling in size as a result of sustaining heavy losses, it was againenlarged in the fall of 1944, this time to brigade size as theSS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger. The brigade took part in the brutalsupression of the Warsaw uprising in 1944, and in February of 1945, wasformed into the 36.Waffen-Grenadier-Division derss.
