| Details | Born: January 30th, 1914 in Heidelberg/Neckar Died: Sept. 17th, 1983 Received the 2nd and 1st Class Iron Cross, the German Cross in Gold, and in 1943, the Knights Cross as SS-Obersturmbannfuhrer and Ia of the 1st SS Panzer Division LSSAH, under 1st Panzer Army, Army Group South. Received the Oakleaves to the KC on May 6th, 1945 as the 2nd-to-last commander of the Das Reich Division. Joined the LSSAH in 1933 at the age of 19. Attended the SS Officer School at Bad Tolz from 1935 - 1936. Served with the Standarte Germania in 1938. Became Ia of the 1st SS Division in 1942. In March 1945, took over command of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich, but was not its last commander. |
