Details | Kapitän zur See Karl-Conrad Mecke received the Knight’s Cross on 11 April 1943 while commanding the 22.Marine-Flak-Regiment. He commanded the unit during the Allied invasion of St. Nazaire in March, 1942. In September of 1944 he was put in charge of the German naval landing operation code named Tanne Ost that was planned to secure the Finnish island of Surrsaari (Ostrov Gogland). During the ill-fated operation the entire German invasion force was captured or killed, and Mecke was captured. He remained a POW in Russia until 1955. |
