History Layed down in May,1935 at Wilhelmshaven Naval Dockyard, launched in October, 1936 and completed in January, 1939. July-September 1939 conversion at Wilhelmshaven Naval Dockyard. September 4th, 1939, unsuccessfully attacked by British bombers while lying in Brunsbuttel. November 21st-27th, 1940 the Scharnhorst sortied as far as south of Iceland and sunk the British auxiliary cruiser Rawalpindi. Febuary 18th-19th, 1940 unsuccessful sortie as far as the Shetlands-Norway narrows.
