    History

    The 5.leichte-Infanterie-Division was formed in November and October of 1941 from the 5.Infanterie-Division. The Division was formed as a low mountain warfare unit, and upon formation in November 1941 was sent to the northern sector of the Eastern Front to fight against the Soviets. While fighting in this region the 5.leichte-Infanterie-Division took part in the battles to break the circle around the forces trapped in the Demyansk Pocket. After fighting on the Eastern Front for a number of months it was then renamed as the 5.Jäger-Division.
