The 31.Volksgrenadier-Division was formed in October of 1944 from the 31.Grenadier-Division.

At the time of its formation the 31.Volksgrenadier-Division was in the Kurland Pocket as part of Heeresgruppe Nord, 16.Armee where it later aquitted itself well enough to be commended in an official OKH unit citation.

In March of 1945 the the 31.Volksgrenadier-Division was evacuated from the port of Libau in Kurland to northern Germany and attached to the 2.Armee. It was later decimated at the Oder front as part of Heeresgruppe Weichsel in April 1945 by the final Soviet offensive on Berlin.
