History

The 45.Volksgrenadier-division was formed from 45.Grenadier-Division which was formed from the remains of the original 45.Infanterie-Division destroyed in June of 1944.

The 45.Volksgrenaider-Division was only briefly trained before being committed to heavy defensive combat in Poland in the Fall of 1944 where it suffered heavy casualties at the Vistula River. The OKW order of battle for March 1945 placed the much weakened 45.Volksgrenadier-Division situated in the southeast sector of the crumbling Eastern Front as part of Heeresgruppe Mitte, 17.Armee, 8.Armeekorps.

The remnants of the formation surrendered in Czechoslovakia in May of 1945.
