Air Raid Warning Service / Luftschutzwarndienst

The Luftschutzwarndienst, or Air Raid Warning Service, was a civilianorganization under the guidance of the Luftwaffe that was responsible for thetimely warning of incoming enemy air raids and attacks on German cities,towns and installations. It functioned by taking reports from its members, from the Flugmeldedienst, and from thevarious related Polizei organizations, after which they processed the informationso as to set in motion the sounding of air raid sirens prior to anattack. The organization was also responsible for the sounding of theall clear siren once a raid or attack was over.
