History

The Gebirgs-Brigade was the sole mountain unit of the German Wehrmacht upon the formation ofthe Wehrmacht in 1935. It was formed from a cadre of well trained mountain troops thathad been apart of the Reichswehr during the Weimar era, held onto in the hopes ofcreating the cadre of a future mountain fighting force. In 1935 this intent was realizedwith the formation of this unit, which on April 9th 1938 was, was formed into the 1.Gebirgsjäger-Division.
