| History | Formed on May 1st, 1943 from the 7.Flieger-Division in France. From the end of May 1943 it was stationed in Flers (near Avignon), in reserve, under XI.Fliegerkorps/Heeresgruppe D. The first parts of the division arrived in Sicily on the 12th of July 1943, directly under XIV.Armeekorps, and went into combat immediately defending the island. This division was the last unit to leave Sicily on the 17th September, 1943. The Division rested in Calabria during the remainder of August and early September. It remained in Italy for the remainder of the war, later earning for itself the title "The Green Devils of Cassino" for its excellent performance during the Battle of Monte Cassino. The division ended the war in northern Italy in 1945. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
